Teaching in the Time of COVID

Posted in

Research into the teacher experience during the school closures in the Spring of 2020 revealed the pressure, strain and resilience of BC Teachers.

Background

In mid-March, as the early stages of the pandemic unfolded, it became clear that K-12 education in the Province of BC would be severely impacted.

When emergency measures came into effect mid-March, 2020, teachers were under pressure to adapt lessons and ways of managing classrooms to enable continuous learning for students. All while addressing concerns of parents, technology challenges, being accountable to their school and education system leaders, and dealing with their own personal situations.

Talking to a few teachers we knew made us realize the gravity of their situation, and we were motivated to help. At that time, Spatial’s research team had a bit of spare capacity and decided to conduct a study to better understand the teacher experience and the kind of help and support they need.

This study captures the teacher journey and experience during COVID and highlights the human toll on teachers, parents and students alike.

Infographic showing teachers' pain points over 4 weeks following the announcement of school closures due to COVID 19.

It looks at our collective unpreparedness for this crisis and what we can learn about the gaps and pain points in the remote education experience for teachers and students.

It also points to some bigger picture opportunities and considerations.

"Can understanding the teacher experience be a catalyst to greater empathy and improved education sector relations?"

"How might be use this crisis to galvanize efforts around innovation in remote education?"

Presentation of Findings

Methodology

The research included an online survey and remote interviews with K-12 teachers from public school districts across BC.

  • 40 participants completed the survey
  • 10 participants also completed interviews
  • Survey questions were a combination of multiple choice and open-ended answers
  • Interviews were semi-structured and lasted approximately 45 minutes
  • Thematic analysis and basic data comparisons were conducted on both interview and survey responses
